Karen Galat, the principal of Newburyport Family Law & Divorce Mediation, was admitted to practice law in Massachusetts in 1982 after receiving her juris doctor degree with honors from Suffolk University Law School. In 1983, she was admitted to practice before the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts and the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit. In 1990, she had the honor of being admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court.

While attending Suffolk Law, Attorney Galat was employed as a paralegal with the Boston firm of Peabody & Brown where she worked almost exclusively in real estate syndication. Following graduation, she worked as an associate in Boston at the Law Offices of Edmund E. Fleming where she concentrated in Family Law, Real Estate, Corporate Law and Civil Litigation. In 1985, Attorney Galat joined a Newburyport law firm formerly known as Beit, Stevens & O’Flaherty where she continued her concentration in Family Law, Corporate Law and Civil Litigation.

In 2000, Attorney Galat opened her own law office in Newburyport where she continued her Divorce and Family Law practice. She has been named as a Guardian Ad Litem (GAL) on numerous occasions by the Essex County Probate & Family Court and is uniquely qualified to handle cases in which custody is disputed.

In 2001, Attorney Galat and a colleague founded Clipper City Networks, a Newburyport company that sold and repaired computers and built websites, and in 2005, Attorney Galat and her husband purchased Snowvillage Inn in northern New Hampshire. During 2003 - 2010, Attorney Galat operated Clipper City Networks and Snowvillage Inn and did not practice law. She returned to the Newburyport area and to the practice of law in 2011 and opened Newburyport Family Law. Divorce Mediation was added in 2012.

In 2012 and 2013, Attorney Galat was named to the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court's Pro Bono Recognition Honor Roll. She is listed in The Directory of Distinguished Americans, and Who's Who of Women and is a Judicial Designee at the Essex County Probate & Family Court for the review of Guardianship Reports.

Attorney Galat is on the Board of Directors of the Greater Newburyport Bar Association and is presently serving as the organization's Vice President.

Attorney Galat is a member of the Massachusetts Council on Family Mediation and a zealous advocate of Alternative Dispute Resolution.
